If your air conditioner isn’t working properly, there are a number of reasons as to why that could be. The easiest way to find the source of the problem is to contact a professional technician to take a look. From our experience, those with no experience cause more harm than good when attempting to repair their A/C themselves. Most people don’t want to hire a technician for fear of being over-charged or hearing the dreaded, “you need a new air conditioner.”
Common Issues with A/C’s
Improper Operation: A common problem with air conditioner is improper operation. If your air conditioner is on, make sure that all of your doors and windows are closed. If even one is open, it can make the AC much less effective in cooling your home. Plus it will have to work harder to keep you house cold, resulting in more expensive energy bills.
Improper Installation: If a central air conditioning unit is not properly installed it can result in airflow and leaking ducts. Often the refrigerant charge doesn’t match the manufacturer’s specifications; the charge is the amount of refrigerant in the system. If proper refrigerant charging isn’t done during the installation process, unit won’t perform as efficiently.
Refrigerant Leaks: Low refrigerant means either two things; it was undercharged during installation or the AC is leaking. If it leaks adding more refrigerant is not an easy fix. To repair this, a professional technician will have to come repair the leak, test out the repair, and then charge the system with the proper amount of refrigerant. Refrigerant leaks are bad for the environment, so make sure to call a technician right away if you suspect leaks.
Inadequate Maintenance: If the air conditioner’s coils and filters get dirty, the unit won’t operate properly, and the fans or compressor are more likely to break down. Make sure that you get a maintenance inspection done every year to ensure that your AC is well maintained to operate efficiently.
Electric Control Failure: The fan and compressor can wear over time, particularly when the air conditioner gets turned on and off on a regular basis. The wires and terminals can also get corroded over time, so it’s a good idea to have the electrical contacts and connections checked during your annual professional service call as well.
Drainage Problems: When it’s the outside air is humid you should make sure that the condensate drain is draining properly and isn’t clogged. Air conditioners won’t drain properly if they are clogged or not mounted at the proper level.
