7 Signs Your Lennox Air Conditioner Needs Repair!

The temperature is soaring to new heights and most Markham residents would agree that air conditioner has become a survival staple this time of the year. There are incessant heat warnings from the weather department so that citizens can brace themselves for the dangerously hot temperature well in advance. It’s so typical to crank up the air conditioner the moment we enter the house and feel relaxed. Imagine the frustration when the AC is not operating adequately in the mid of a hot day, not to forget the health concerns that may follow. So, make certain your Lennox air conditioner is up to the task of endowing you utmost comfort on hotter days and look for the signs that may herald bigger problems, such as complete unit breakdown.

Here are 7 tell-tale signs you need to watch out for in your air conditioner if you want to prevail over these scorching days of summer:

1. Loud Noise Stemming from the Unit

Your Lennox air conditioning system ought to function fairly quietly, except for a certain amount of motor sound. However, when the unit begins to emanate unusual sounds like grinding, squealing or grating, this might be an indication that either the unit needs repair or replacement, depending on the severity of the issue. More often than not, the noise occurs when the metal component of the unit needs more lubrication or the belt has slipped out of place. The grinding sound is caused due to the malfunctioning of the motor’s bearings. Failure to address these issues timely may result in expensive breakdowns.

2. Lesser Airflow than Usual

If you’ve been observing a reduced air flow through the vents even at full blast, the compressor may be on the verge of failing. When some of your rooms are receiving proper airflow and others are not, there might be trouble with the ductwork, which implies your AC needs emergency repair. Another notable reason that might be hindering the airflow is the debris stuck in the vents. Having the air ducts thoroughly cleaned is a great way to restore the air flow and ensure the AC is performing fully when it matters the most.

3. Problems with Thermostat

Sometimes the trouble lies in the thermostat, not in the AC unit itself. One way to identify if the thermostat is at fault for the room temperature being so high is to see if one section of your house is extremely cold, whereas another section remains at the same temperature level.

4.  Emission of Foul Odours

When your AC is emitting an odd smell, that clearly indicates there is something wrong with the AC. Mostly these odours are the result of the wire insulation burning out, or the mould build-up inside the duct or the unit. In either of the cases, it’s important to call professionals to assess the situation and repair the unit before it gets worse.

5. Moisture or Water Dripping Around the Unit

When you notice a leakage from your air conditioner, there might be two reasons behind that. First, the leak can be refrigerant, which can pose grave health ramifications to you and your family members, and hence must be repaired at once. Second, the drain tube which disposes of the condensation is either broken or blocked. Although it’s not much of a serious problem, when left unattended, it can lead to mould growth which is another issue in itself.

6.  Hot Air

The whole point of installing an air conditioning system is to cool down the air inside the home. However, when it starts to blow out hot air all of a sudden, there is definitely an underlying problem brewing with your cooling unit. The reasons can be various, from reduced Freon levels to a problematic compressor. If you happen to encounter any of these circumstances, the unit will most likely need replacement.

7. The AC is Simply Old

It’s good to bear in mind that a good quality AC is developed to last at least ten years, and when it surpasses this limit, the overall performance is likely to be impacted, though not necessarily. In case your air conditioner has been installed at least a decade ago, it might be beginning to reveal the signs of wear and tear that require instant repair. In more serious cases such as erratic turning on and off for no reason, you might have to call your HVAC professionals to get it checked and replaced with a new one.

Not experiencing any of the above-mentioned issues, and still your utility bills are higher than the average? Maybe your AC is utilizing more energy than it should to keep the air cool, and hence the surge in bills. In this case, you may need to replace the unit with a new, more energy-efficient model that can also get you certain rebates.

4 Common Attic Insulation Types

Does attic insulation work in the summer? Many homeowners grapple with this question all too often due to the common assumption that insulation is something which keeps the home warmer in colder months. This is true to some extent, though what insulation does is slow down the movement of heat between 2 layers or spaces. This means during the summer season, the attic insulation will help prevent your home from overheating.

How does insulation work?

To ascertain how insulation is equally effective in both warmer and colder months, let’s first take some time to understand how insulation exactly works. As you probably already know, air acts as an excellent insulator when it is trapped or unable to escape. By trapping little bubbles of air, you can actually create a good insulating effect. And since insulation is all about preventing the transfer of heat, it is of no significance if it is hotter outside than inside or vice versa. Whatever the direction, the warm air won’t be able to escape that barrier, and the attic insulation will successfully do its job. Another compelling reason for installing insulation in the summer months is that it will give the contractor good weather conditions to complete the work promptly.

Before going ahead with insulation, make sure to seal the attic bypasses!

By attic bypass, we mean any area of the property that may let the air seep through the walls of the attic by bypassing the insulation. Examples are the areas located around chimneys, ceiling light fixtures, heating ducts, bath exhaust fans, plumbing, electrical wires, dropped ceilings and soffits. Attic bypasses are the reasons behind moisture, mould, and frost in the room, and it’s recommended to seal these areas before you go forward with attic insulation.

4 Types of Attic Insulation

Spray Foam

Spray Foam is the best attic insulation method available, from a performance viewpoint. It comes in two types: open-cell and closed-cell, with each having the insulation values of R-3.6 and R-6.5, respectively. When installed properly, both types will fill up all the nooks and corners quite efficiently, thus, creating a great air barrier. With no room left for air movement, you will have zero heat transfer via convection. In closed-cell foam, you’ll also get to have a moisture barrier at more than 2” thickness. You can easily tell a closed-cell foam from the open-cell one just by poking your finger into it. Closed-cell foam is way harder than open-cell that feels relatively softer in touch.

Fiberglass loose-fill insulation

A preferred option among builders for newly constructed homes, this type of insulation comes with an R-value of 2.5 per inch. However, one can’t just purchase this material and try to spread it out himself/herself. A special equipment is needed to evenly distribute the loose fiberglass. Research shows that fiberglass loose-fill is one of the best choices when it comes to appropriate attic insulation.

Cellulose

With an R-value of approx. 3.5 per inch, cellulose is recommended for its excellent ability to control the air movement. It is produced from recycled paper with boric acid mixed into it to ensure fire resistance and insect control. Although cellulose does not develop an air barrier, it is highly dense which prevents air movement, helping with frost control in the attic. Many professionals favour the idea of utilizing wet-spray cellulose wherein a small amount of water is added in cellulose to reduce the dust and to improve the insulation per inch.

Fiberglass Batts

It is arguably the easiest method of insulation for any place in your home and ideal for do-it-yourself homeowners. Made of various mineral materials such as Rockwool, you can select the required width and cut the material using a utility knife to fit correctly between the joists. The base R-value of fiberglass batts is 3.2.

Factors that determine the success of your attic insulation project

The performance of attic insulation greatly depends on whether or not it was properly installed. For example, even a minor gap left between studs while installing insulation can keep you from achieving the desired results. The one which is packed too tightly or compressed is just as ineffective. Moreover, it’s also recommended to ensure if the chosen material offers a good amount of fire and pest resistance.

There are umpteen benefits of attic insulation, with reduced heating and cooling bills being the most popular and important ones. Before you decide to go for it, however, it’s always good to know about different options available in the pool, and various factors to ensure the success of your project.

5 Reasons to Choose Central Air Conditioning Systems

Even if you already have window air conditioner units installed in your home in Markham, there are myriad reasons why you should consider switching to central air conditioners. One of the most obvious yet significant differences lies in the way they are installed. Not only does it affect the aesthetic appeal of your home from both inside and outside, but having a window unit also means the windows in your home will always stay open. This could easily lead someone to break into your room, especially if the unit is installed at ground level.

In stark contrast, central units condition the entire house through an outdoor compressor and condenser coil attached to indoor furnace fitted with evaporator coil. In simple words, these systems utilize vents or air ducts located in each room to send the cool air. Instead of cooling just one room, a central conditioning unit will cool all the rooms simultaneously.

Here are top 5 benefits of having a central air conditioning system installed in your home:

1. Energy-efficient

The fact that a central air conditioning unit can distribute cool air in every room of the house at the same time is a reason enough to go for this kind of air conditioning systems. Since there is one overall temperature, the central conditioning systems ensure lower energy bills as compared to having several window systems installed throughout the home.

2. Quiet Operation

Since the condenser fan and compressor are located outside the building, the noise will be barely detectable, which means you can enjoy a sound sleep, without having to bear the loud noise which is common with portable window units.

3. Improved Air Quality

The central units consist of air filters that are responsible for filtering out the harmful particles like dust, germs, pet hair, dander etc. from air before it reaches the room. This means you will always get a better indoor air quality with central air conditioning units in your home. You can even control the humidity levels to ensure a comfortable indoor environment.

4. Easy operation

Ease of operation makes central conditioning systems a preferable option among homeowners. Once it is installed, you can easily control the temperature as per your comfort level during the day using programmable thermostat.

5. Cost-efficient

A central air conditioner may cost you more than a window unit; however the benefits are worth the initial investment. If we compare the both, several window units collectively consume as much energy as central systems, but they have been found to be less efficient.

Looking for top quality central air conditioning units in Markham? Constant Home Comfort brings to you a range of Keeprite central air conditioners that adhere to energy-saving federal efficiency standards. Available with 10-year warranty options, these systems are durable, efficient and service friendly. By going green in your choice of HVAC systems, you can even earn certain rebates and discounts.
