Ontario residents participating in the Canada Greener Homes Initiative could qualify for payments ranging from $5,000 to cover part of the costs related to qualifying home retrofit projects or up to $600 as the highest allowable contribution towards covering combined pre/post-EnerGuide evaluation expenses. Furthermore, interest-free loans with 10-year repayment periods were made available to support substantial home retrofit initiatives. Buildings, including our homes, accounted for 18% of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2018. Through the Canada Greener Homes Grant, homeowners could make their homes more energy-efficient while simultaneously creating jobs across Canada for energy advisors, expanding domestic green supply chains, and combatting climate change. What were the results of this initiative? Up to 700,000 grants of $5,000 were available for homeowners looking to make energy efficient retrofits to their homes such as adding better insulation. EnerGuide evaluations valued up to $600, and expert advice helped homeowners plan these retrofits efficiently, creating new jobs across Canada through this initiative. Participants were eligible to claim up to $5,600 through this initiative, and up to $12,000 was available as rebates overall. Progress updates were given throughout its life; unfortunately, this program has now closed its doors.

Owners of these properties can explore their eligibility for rebates. However, there are certain homes and circumstances that are exempt from this program: - Rental units that are not heated by Enbridge Gas and where the owner is not the primary resident. - Multi-unit residential buildings with more than three storeys or a size exceeding 600 m^2. - Properties constructed less than six months ago. - Mixed-use structures where less than half of the area is dedicated to residential living. - Residences that have already availed the maximum benefits from the Home Efficiency - Rebate Plus (HER+) or Canada Greener Homes Grant (CGHG) programs. This includes a cap of $10,000 for homes heated by Enbridge and $5,000 for those that aren’t. - Homes that began their upgrade procedures prior to conducting the necessary pre-retrofit energy assessment. - This initiative, in partnership with Enbridge Gas and the Government of Canada, strives to make homes more energy-efficient and eco-friendly.

Grant eligibility criteria:

- Must be paired with an energy efficiency retrofit from the Canada Greener Homes Grant initiative.

- Exclusions: New heat pumps that include new thermostats are not eligible for combination with this measure.

- A resiliency measure and a thermostat must be combined with another energy efficiency measure to qualify for the grants.

All equipment must be purchased in Canada.
Online purchases are only eligible when made through a Canadian distributor.

Space and Water Heating:

Furnaces and boilers do not qualify for the Canada Greener Homes Grant Initiative, except for homeowners residing in northern and off-grid communities. Given Canada’s cold climate, space heating consumes over 60% of the energy in the typical Canadian home. Transitioning to more energy-efficient heating equipment, like a heat pump, can result in energy savings and potentially reduce both utility bills and your carbon footprint.
