A ductless heat pump — also called a mini-split — is a heating and cooling system that works without ductwork. It consists of an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air handlers connected by a small refrigerant line that passes through a 3-inch hole in the wall. There are no ducts, no major renovations, and no need to tear apart your home to install one.
Unlike a traditional furnace or air conditioner that generates heat or cold, a heat pump moves heat — extracting it from outdoor air and transferring it inside during winter, and reversing the process in summer. This makes it dramatically more energy-efficient than electric baseboard heaters and highly effective for Ontario's climate, with modern cold-climate models maintaining full heating capacity down to -25°C or lower.
One system does the job of both a heating unit and a cooling unit — replacing your furnace and air conditioner in a single, sleek installation.
Ductless heat pumps are an excellent fit for a wide range of situations. They are particularly well-suited for:
- Homes without existing ductwork — older Toronto and GTA properties, century homes, cottages, and heritage buildings
- Home additions, sunrooms, garages, or finished basements that aren't connected to a central HVAC system
- Homeowners replacing electric baseboard heaters or window air conditioners
- Properties where running new ductwork would be impractical, expensive, or visually disruptive
- Anyone who wants independent zone control — different temperatures in different rooms simultaneously
- Homeowners looking to reduce energy bills and qualify for Ontario and federal green energy rebates
- Anyone who wants a quieter, cleaner, more consistent alternative to forced-air heating and cooling
If your home already has a fully functional ducted furnace and central air conditioning system that isn't due for replacement, a full ductless conversion may not be the most economical path. However, ductless systems are commonly added as supplemental heating and cooling for specific zones even in homes with existing HVAC.
This is often the first major decision buyers face, and it comes down to how many areas of your home you want to condition.
Single-Zone Systems
A single-zone system pairs one outdoor unit with one indoor air handler. It's the most affordable entry point and the right choice when you need to heat or cool one specific room or area. Common applications include a basement apartment, a home office, a sunroom, a garage workshop, or a room above a garage that never stays comfortable.
Multi-Zone Systems
A multi-zone system connects one outdoor unit to multiple indoor air handlers — typically two to eight zones. Each indoor unit operates independently, so family members can set different temperatures in their own rooms. Multi-zone systems are ideal for whole-home comfort without ductwork. They are more cost-effective than installing multiple standalone single-zone systems because you only need one outdoor unit, and they minimize the number of penetrations through your home's exterior.
Our recommendation: if you think you'll want to expand the system later, plan for multi-zone from the start. Adding zones to an existing outdoor unit is straightforward and economical; replacing the outdoor unit to accommodate more zones is not.
Getting the right size is one of the most critical — and most commonly mishandled — parts of buying a ductless heat pump. An undersized system won't keep up on the coldest or hottest days. An oversized system will short-cycle (turn on and off too frequently), causing uneven temperatures, excess humidity, premature wear, and wasted energy.
Sizing is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units) per hour, or tonnage. Common residential sizes range from 9,000 BTU (roughly 3/4 ton) for a small bedroom up to 36,000 BTU (3 ton) for a large open-concept main floor. For multi-zone systems, each indoor unit is sized independently to match its room, and the outdoor unit is sized to handle the combined load.
Proper sizing requires a Manual J heat load calculation — a formal assessment that accounts for your home's square footage, ceiling height, insulation levels, window size and orientation, local climate data, and occupancy. At Constant Home Comfort, every quote includes a proper load calculation. We never guess at sizing, and we'd encourage you to be skeptical of any contractor who quotes you a system without assessing your home first.
When comparing ductless heat pumps, you'll encounter two key efficiency ratings:
SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2): Measures cooling efficiency over an entire season. A higher SEER2 rating means less electricity consumed to deliver the same amount of cooling. Look for systems with a SEER2 of at least 15; premium models at Constant Home Comfort reach SEER2 ratings of 20 or higher.
HSPF2 (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor 2): Measures heating efficiency over an entire season. A higher HSPF2 rating means more heat delivered per unit of electricity consumed. For Ontario's climate, look for a minimum HSPF2 of 8.5; top cold-climate systems achieve HSPF2 ratings of 10 or more.
Higher efficiency costs more upfront but pays you back through lower monthly energy bills. Over the 15 to 20-year lifespan of a quality ductless heat pump, the energy savings from a high-efficiency model often more than offset the price difference — especially as electricity rates in Ontario continue to rise.
Note that as of January 2023, Canadian standards moved to the updated SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings, which more accurately reflect real-world conditions. When comparing systems, make sure you're comparing the same standard.
This is a step many buyers overlook, and it can make a significant difference in both comfort and rebate eligibility.
Standard heat pumps begin to lose heating capacity as outdoor temperatures drop below 0°C, and some older or budget models stop working effectively below -15°C. For most of Ontario — where winter temperatures regularly fall to -15°C to -25°C in the GTA and even lower in northern regions — a standard heat pump simply isn't enough on its own.
Cold-climate heat pumps are specifically engineered to maintain full or near-full heating capacity down to -25°C or lower. They use enhanced vapor injection compressor technology and other design features to extract heat from extremely cold air. These systems:
- Deliver reliable comfort throughout Ontario winters without relying on backup electric resistance heat
- Qualify for government rebate programs that require cold-climate rated equipment
- Perform more efficiently over the full heating season, reducing energy bills
- Provide greater peace of mind that your system will perform when you need it most
All ductless heat pump systems recommended by Constant Home Comfort are cold-climate rated and appropriate for Ontario's winters.

Rebates can significantly reduce the net cost of your ductless heat pump purchase. Ontario homeowners currently have access to several programs:
Canada Greener Homes Grant: Federal grants of up to $5,000 are available to homeowners who complete an EnerGuide energy audit and install qualifying cold-climate heat pumps. The audit must be completed before and after the installation.
Canada Greener Homes Loan: An interest-free loan of up to $40,000 is available for qualifying energy retrofits, including heat pump installations. This can be combined with the grant program.
Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate Plus: Enbridge Gas customers can receive rebates when upgrading from a gas heating system to a qualifying heat pump. Rebate amounts vary based on the system and current program terms.
Municipal and Utility Programs: Some Ontario municipalities and local utilities offer additional incentive programs on top of federal and provincial offerings. Our team monitors these programs and will identify every rebate available in your area.
Important: rebate programs have eligibility requirements, application deadlines, and approved product lists. Working with a certified installer like Constant Home Comfort ensures your installation is done to the specifications required to qualify for maximum savings.
A well-maintained ductless heat pump will reliably deliver comfort for 15 to 20 years or more. Fortunately, maintenance requirements are minimal compared to a gas furnace:
- Clean indoor filters monthly: Most ductless systems have washable filters that slide out easily. Rinsing them monthly during heavy-use seasons keeps airflow strong and indoor air quality high.
- Clear the outdoor unit seasonally: Remove leaves, debris, and snow accumulation from around the outdoor unit. Ensure at least 18 to 24 inches of clearance on all sides for proper airflow.
- Annual professional service: An annual tune-up by a certified technician — including refrigerant level check, coil cleaning, electrical connection inspection, and full system test — extends system life and maintains peak efficiency.
- Keep indoor vanes unobstructed: Make sure furniture, curtains, or shelving doesn't block the airflow from the indoor unit.
Constant Home Comfort offers maintenance plans to keep your system running at peak performance year after year, with the added peace of mind of priority service should anything ever need attention.
- Choosing by price alone: The cheapest system is rarely the best value. A lower-efficiency model will cost more to operate every month for the next 15 to 20 years. Factor in lifecycle costs, not just the sticker price.
- Skipping the in-home assessment: Any contractor who gives you a firm quote without seeing your home is guessing at the size. Improper sizing leads to comfort problems and wasted money.
- Ignoring cold-climate ratings: For Ontario winters, a cold-climate rated system is essential — both for performance and to qualify for most rebate programs.
- Hiring an uncertified installer: Improper installation can void your manufacturer's warranty and result in a system that never performs as designed. Always choose a licensed, certified contractor.
- Not asking about rebates upfront: Rebate eligibility often depends on the specific equipment chosen and the installation process. Confirm rebate details before signing any contract.
- Underestimating future needs: If you plan to finish your basement or add a home office down the road, plan your system capacity now. It's far more economical to size up the outdoor unit at installation than to replace it later.
How long do ductless heat pumps last?
A quality ductless heat pump that is properly sized, professionally installed, and regularly maintained typically lasts 15 to 20 years. Some systems have been reliably operational for longer. Choosing a reputable brand and a certified installer significantly extends system lifespan.
Can a ductless heat pump replace my furnace entirely?
For many Ontario homes, yes — a cold-climate ductless heat pump can serve as the primary heating system year-round. Some homeowners choose to retain their gas furnace as a backup for extreme cold below -25°C, particularly if their home is very large or poorly insulated. Our technicians will give you an honest assessment based on your specific home.
Is a ductless heat pump better than a central heat pump?
Both have their place. A central (ducted) heat pump is ideal for homes with existing ductwork in good condition. A ductless system is the better choice when there are no ducts, when individual zone control is important, or when only certain areas need to be conditioned. The two technologies are not competitors so much as solutions suited to different home configurations.
Can I install a ductless heat pump myself?
Ductless heat pump installation involves working with refrigerants, electrical systems, and structural penetrations — all of which require licensed trades in Ontario. DIY installation is not legal, voids manufacturer warranties, and creates safety risks. Professional installation is required to qualify for rebates as well.
How noisy are ductless heat pumps?
Ductless systems are among the quietest HVAC options available. Indoor units typically operate at 19 to 26 dB — quieter than a whisper. Outdoor units are also designed for low noise output, typically in the 50 to 60 dB range at one metre, which is comparable to a normal conversation.
What warranty should I expect?
Most major brands offer compressor warranties of 5 to 10 years and parts warranties of 5 years on registered equipment. Some brands, including those carried by Constant Home Comfort, offer extended warranties of up to 12 years on registered systems. Always register your system after installation to activate the full warranty coverage.
The best decision you can make is to have a certified professional assess your home before committing to any system. At Constant Home Comfort, our free in-home consultations are thorough, pressure-free, and designed to give you all the information you need to make a confident choice.
We carry Ontario's best selection of ductless heat pumps from Lennox, Daikin, Bosch, GREE, and American Standard — and we'll help you find the right system at the right price, with every available rebate applied.
