Ways to Prepare Your Lennox Furnace

Filter

Check your filter and change it if necessary. If you notice that it’s covered in dust, dirt, or other debris, you need to replace it. When the filter is clogged with all of that gunk, it makes it difficult for the Lennox furnace to circulate air throughout your home. Not only is this adding to your energy bill, but it is also damaging to the environment. By continuously replacing the filter, you are also reducing the risk of your furnace breaking down.

Thermostat

Switch your thermostat from cool (air conditioner) to heat (furnace). You’d be surprised how many people forget about this. Older models you will most likely just need to flip a switch, but if you have a more modern digital thermostat, you will likely have to adjust the settings to switch it over. If you’re not sure how you should refer to your owner’s manual. If you have an old thermostat, consider getting it upgraded to a more modern one that will be more energy efficient.

Burners

Dust can accumulate in the burners over the summer. It’s important to make sure the burners are clean, as dust can cause the burners work less efficiently  if too much dust has been accumulated. It can also be dangerous, and in some cases, it can result in a fire. Make sure that your furnace’s burners are dust and debris free. You should also look for signs of rust, as this is an indicator that you need to replace the burners.

Ways to Prepare Your Home

Window Screens

Warm air can easily escape through windows. If you have the option to do so, take out your window screens before the weather gets chilly, and install storm windows. Storm windows will decrease the amount of heat that escapes through the windows. This will help save energy as your Lennox furnace won’t have to work as hard to get keep your home an appropriate temperature.

Air Vents and Ducts

Your air vents and ducts are how your Lennox furnace circulates the warm air around your home. Make sure that your air vents aren’t covered by furniture or other obstructions, such as boxes. If the vents are blocked, the air can’t circulate, and your home will be cold. Try moving your furniture out of the way to allow better air flow. If your ducts have a lot of dust in them, that dust will get pushed out the vents and throughout your home when you turn the furnace on. To clean them, simply take a screwdriver and remove the vents, and vacuum out the ducts with a hose vacuum to remove excess dust. You can also call for a technician to come and do this for you if you wish.
